    The rainy season in Fukuoka

    August 13, 2023

Fukuoka ended its rainy season, or 梅雨つゆ (rainy season) about 3 weeks ago.

When that happens, we call it 梅雨明つゆあけ (ending the rainy season).

梅雨入つゆいり (entering the rainy season) is the opposite, and talks about when the rainy season starts.

Caleb tells me he loves 梅雨, and I understand him to an extent. Rainy weather does have a certain vibe to it that's calming.

That said, personally I'm kind of glad that it's over. It's much less humid outside now and I don't need my 除湿機じょしつき (dehumidifier) running 24/7.

If you wanna learn more about 梅雨 and 台風たいふう (typhoon), go check out these Laid-back Japanese and Not-so Laid-back Japanese episodes~

    Not-so Laid-back Japanese: Youtube, Spotify

Thing about Fukuoka is, once 梅雨明け comes, 台風たいふう (typhoon) season starts to pick up.

In fact, the other day we just got hit by 台風6号ろくごう (typhoon 6).

Thankfully, by the time most typhoons get to Fukuoka, they have slowed down compared to when they first strike land in 鹿児島かごしま (Kagoshima), but there were some trees knocked down that I saw on the news.

The thing about when a 台風 hits is that it's generally a bad idea to go outside. And it woke me up around 5 am because the wind was so loud.

So I stayed home and studied a bunch of Japanese and played Tears of the Kingdom (in Japanese of course) while being very sleepy 😴

Speaking of which, did you study today?

Showing up is always a victory, even if you're a bit too sleepy to focus fully and don't have a perfect study day. → Study Now

Remember to take advantage of those rainy (and windy!) days.

Even when the weather is a bit gloomy, studying Japanese has always helped me avoid my mood being that way as well ^^

    Speaking of which…

    Some new Japanese 👀

While I was studying through NativShark the other day, I learned しっくり (to be fitting).

I have added it to the long mental list of onomatopoeia that I'd like to be able to pull out of my back pocket when speaking but will probably forget until I hear it again randomly out in the wild.

It's fun learning these though. Thankfully, onomatopoeia get easier as you learn more and more Japanese. And eventually, you start to be able to understand them due to context even if you're hearing them for the first time.

All you have to do is keep hitting the Study Now button ^^

By the way, if this sentence is too hard, all you need to do is keep hitting the Study Now button, and you'll understand it when you get there yourself. This sentence is from Phase 3.
