What is “archiving” and how can it help me?

“Archiving” content means that that piece of content will no longer show in your reviews. This is helpful when you feel confident or are already familiar with something and want to keep reviews low so you can progress through NativShark more efficiently.

To archive something, press the “a” button on your keyboard, or tap/click on the small box during reviews.

You can also archive sentences in lessons by toggling them off (when learning new content with the Study Now button).

Archiving is helpful whenever you feel confident that you don’t need to see this piece of Japanese again, want to keep your reviews down, or have studied Japanese to some extent elsewhere and want to progress faster through NativShark.

Once the review period is greater than a year, NativShark will automatically archive content for you.

    Archiving during reviews

The archive button looks like this in reviews:

Press this button or “a” on your keyboard and the card will no longer show in your reviews.

    Archiving while studying new Japanese

This will depend on what piece of content you want to archive.

Lesson sentences are archived by the toggle at the bottom of any lesson:

Kanji flashcards can be archived by clicking on them in the presentation page:

    shark_instructor
Kanji flashcards are what we tend to tell students to be the most lenient with archiving.

This is because kanji flashcards are simply designed to warm up your brain to kanji.

Full learning comes from seeing kanji in the rest of the system, so spending a lot of time on these or stressing about memorizing them isn't necessary  ^^

Alternatively, you might also always choose the smiley face on kanji flashcards. We recommend this with other reviews as well.

For more info, see how we recommend you answer review flashcards shark_whoa

Vocab flashcards can be archived similarly to kanji flashcards, by clicking on them during the presentation page:

All of these can be archived at any time when they come up in reviews as well shark_whoa

    Mass-archiving content

Content can also be archived via the Flashcards page.

Choose the relevant deck, select whatever you want to archive, and then select "Archive selected".

Here's an example of what archiving multiple kanji flashcards looks like:

    Unarchiving content

If you accidentally archived something or want to see it again in reviews, go to your Flashcards (also found in the Library dropdown).

From there, click the relevant deck (Kanji, Lesson, or Vocabulary on the left) and choose the card or cards you want to unarchive.

    Then click/tap on "Unarchive selected".

It may help to sort by status "Archived", all of which is also shown here:
